Eastern Michigan University at a Glance

Eastern Michigan University, located in Ypsilanti, Michigan, is a comprehensive university that was founded by the state legislature in 1849. The fifth largest university in Michigan with an enrollment of approximately 22,000 students, EMU offers more than 200 graduate and undergraduate degree programs.

Our Most Important Asset -- Our Students

Our whole reason for being can be summed up in just two words -- our students. We never lose sight of the fact that they are our number one priority.

The students who depend on us for their education are a diverse group. They come not only from across Michigan but 50 other states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and 73 foreign countries. The student population also includes a significant number of non-traditional students, returning to school to further their education. Many more take courses off campus, through Continuing Education, in 14 Michigan counties. The World College coordinates international programs while our Corporate Services provides educational programs for clients in government and business.

The Eastern Edge

Eastern Michigan offers a low ratio of students to faculty (20:1). Most classes are taught by full professors, and faculty are easily accessible and responsive to students’ academic needs. Our faculty care about students as individuals and want them to succeed.

At Eastern Michigan, we emphasize learning experiences for our faculty as well. You will find them actively involved in research and publishing. But the emphasis here is not in research solely for professional advancement. Students assist faculty in research and incorporate the information into classroom discussion.

Booth Location Options

We will use the entire facility for the fair except for the private offices located on the third floor. We will assign booth locations in the following areas: arena floor, gymnasium, concourse walkways, eight private suites and the loading dock. Following are descriptions of these areas:

Loading Dock: Yes, we even place tables in the loading dock area for employers who are last to register/pay! Because of the popularity of this event, if you know for sure you are attending, we encourage you to register and pay early. The loading dock area (with approximately 16 tables) is located on the lower level of the building next to the main basketball arena.

Arena Floor: The largest area in the facility, this space is 170’ x 108’ (20,000 square feet) and will hold approximately 100 tables. Located on the lower level of the building, this space is without windows but has an airy atmosphere.

Concourse Areas: These are the hallways in the building where approximately 24 tables will be positioned in between floor-to-ceiling columns. Windows provide a source for natural lighting in addition to overhead light fixtures. This space provides room for longer candidate waiting lines.

Private Suites: Located on the main floor surrounding the basketball arena, these eight suites provide special amenities including comfortable seating (sofa and chairs), electrical hookups, and more! These suites will be used in lieu of a table on the main floor or elsewhere in the building. Suites are available on a first-reserved, first-paid basis. Each private suite is an additional $100.

Semi-Private Interviews

As a means of providing additional service to our employers, we now offer school districts the opportunity to compliment their recruitment booth (located throughout the building) by securing a separate table for semi-private interviews. These additional tables will be located in the Atrium (main lobby) of the Convocation Center. The Atrium is also used for candidate registration/check-in and where we host lunch.

The interview tables will be available from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. Each interview is 30 minutes. This schedule will accommodate a total of ten semi-private interviews per recruiter. We will provide forms for you to complete in order to track the candidates and their interview time slots.

Each district may reserve one of these tables at an additional cost of $100.00. This fee includes one recruiter permanently stationed at this table. Should you choose to have a second recruiter at this table to simultaneously interview an additional candidate; an additional $50 fee will be charged. Important note: recruiters who participate in the semi-private interviews may switch positions with their colleagues on the main floor area of the large job fair; however, you must maintain the same number of recruiters at the semi-private interview table throughout the day.

Each semi-private round table in the Atrium is 8’ in diameter and will be preset with 8 chairs. Tablecloths will be pre-set on each table. After lunch dishes have been cleared from the tables, our catering staff will replace the table linens with fresh ones.

We will set aside a special area in the atrium for candidates to sit while they wait for your recruiter to escort them to your semi-private table. In order to access this area, candidates must first receive an interview pass from a recruiter at your main table (located throughout the building).

We offer 40 semi-private tables for these interviews. They are available on a first-reserved, first-paid, first-secured basis. If you are interested in this amenity, please indicate your selection on our online registration form.

Luncheon Arrangements

We will not close the job fair for the employer luncheon. Instead, we will keep the fair open. School districts who send more then one recruiter are asked to alternate thier lunch schedules so recruiting booths are covered at all times. Lunch space is limited so we will do two separate seatings: 12:30-1 p.m. and 1-1:30 p.m. Employer booths will not be monitored for security. Eastern Michigan University (EMU) is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

A catered buffet luncheon will be held for recruiters in the Atrium located on the main floor of the Convocation Center. Plan on joining us for lunch and networking with your colleagues.

Market your District

Employer Advertisements:

We again offer employers the opportunity to place an ad in the packet of materials we distribute to each candidate at the fair. The cost is $100. Your ad should be camera-ready, black and white only, and sized 6" wide x 3" tall. Please email your ad in a jpg format by March 27, 2009 to bjones1@emich.edu. Only emailed ads can be accepted. Packets not used at the job fair will be available to candidates unable to attend the event. Please note: the number of ads from school districts will be restricted due to increased printing costs.

Design Guidelines to Help You Prepare Your Advertisement:
1. Use graphics including real photos of your district.
2. Keep wording minimal for greater impact.
3. List incentives i.e. mentoring program, relocation/benefits package, etc.
4. Describe community highlights, i.e. coastal beaches, sunshine, low cost of living, etc.
5. Include your district's contact person, phone number, and mailing/web site address

Michigan Weather

For out-of-state recruiters who have never visited the Great Lakes state, we share the following weather advice: If you don’t like the weather on any particular day, stick around for 24 hours as it will change!

Michigan regularly experiences a variety of weather patterns that move through the state.
Internet sources indicate that temperatures in April for the Chicago and southern Great Lakes
area can range from a low of 37 to a high of 57 degrees. So, in order to be prepared, we advise you to bring jackets, umbrellas and other layered apparel that will protect you from the elements. Of the last eleven job fairs, it rained five times. The last three years we experienced 60-degree temperatures with sunshine.
