Eastern Michigan University at a Glance

Eastern Michigan University, located in Ypsilanti, Michigan, is a comprehensive university that was founded by the state legislature in 1849. The fifth largest university in Michigan with an enrollment of approximately 22,000 students, EMU offers more than 200 graduate and undergraduate degree programs.

Our Most Important Asset -- Our Students

Our whole reason for being can be summed up in just two words -- our students. We never lose sight of the fact that they are our number one priority.

The students who depend on us for their education are a diverse group. They come not only from across Michigan but 50 other states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and 73 foreign countries. The student population also includes a significant number of non-traditional students, returning to school to further their education. Many more take courses off campus, through Continuing Education, in 14 Michigan counties. The World College coordinates international programs while our Corporate Services provides educational programs for clients in government and business.

The Eastern Edge

Eastern Michigan offers a low ratio of students to faculty (20:1). Most classes are taught by full professors, and faculty are easily accessible and responsive to students’ academic needs. Our faculty care about students as individuals and want them to succeed.

At Eastern Michigan, we emphasize learning experiences for our faculty as well. You will find them actively involved in research and publishing. But the emphasis here is not in research solely for professional advancement. Students assist faculty in research and incorporate the information into classroom discussion.
